Getting your FREE FE2 to run...

There can be a problem with the downloadable shareware version of FE2 you get from Frontier Developments.The shareware version has been slightly altered from the original with the inclusion of several BAT files. The little YN.COM gatekeeping decision program as well as that silly FRONTIER.BAT (bat file) can cause a situation where the program will not launch. The problem encountered is with the YN.COM program... which for some reason does not run properly on a variety of WIN95/98 machines when at the DOS prompt either via reboot to DOS or via dropping to the DOS PROMPT - Specifically, it simply does not display anything... users get a blank screen (no text files are displayed nor does the game start... so FRONTIER.BAT is not being run...) Users think the game has crashed... and punch CTRL+ALT+DEL, to reboot back into Windows. As YN.COM and FRONTIER.BAT are not really needed, the solution for any user who has this problem is to simply type the following: REN FRONTIER.DAT FRONTIER.EXE Start the program by typing FRONTIER. This disables the newly added gatekeeping feature which is the problem... Users should still be bound by the conditions set forth in the shareware agreement.
